Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) Youth Stakeholder Engagement
30 May 2025 | South Africa
South Africa’s automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation — one that holds the power to redefine the country’s economic future and unlock opportunities for its youth. On the 30th of May 2025, the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) hosted the Youth Stakeholder Engagement, a pivotal initiative focused on addressing one of the country’s most urgent challenges: youth unemployment.

The Challenge: A Generation Full of Potential, A Sector Full of Opportunity
South Africa continues to face a national crisis with one of the highest youth unemployment rates globally. Yet, the automotive industry — a foundational pillar of South Africa’s economy — is growing in scale, investment, and technological innovation. With this growth comes the need for a skilled, youthful workforce ready to shape the future of the industry.
This engagement aimed to confront this disconnect — bridging the gap between youth potential and industrial opportunity.
A Sector on the Rise: Manufacturing, Production, and Foreign Investment
South Africa’s automotive industry contributes significantly to GDP and employment. With manufacturing plants from major brands like Ford, BMW, Toyota, Isuzu, Nissan, and Volkswagen, the country has positioned itself as an attractive manufacturing base in the Global South.
The rise of electric vehicle production, localisation of automotive parts, and expanded assembly operations are creating new jobs and technical roles. Foreign investment continues to pour in, especially in automotive special economic zones (SEZs) — giving South African youth a rare opportunity to plug into a sector poised for exponential growth.

The Programme: A Day of Dialogue, Insight, and Empowerment
The Youth Stakeholder Engagement was not just symbolic — it was a day of action and critical dialogue. The programme was anchored by key voices in the industry and government who are committed to creating long-term impact:
- Welcome Address by AIDC CEO, Andile Africa, who set the tone by outlining the AIDC’s commitment to developing skills and empowering youth through industry-aligned programmes.
- Craig Cornish (AIDC Board Chairperson) and Meloney Van Eck discussed the specific opportunities and programmes offered by the AIDC to young South Africans.
- MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile, delivered a keynote on government’s role in supporting youth in industrial sectors and emphasized the urgency of inclusive growth.
- Presentations from leading automotive brands — Nissan, Ford, BMW, and Mahindra — highlighted career pathways, technical training opportunities, graduate programmes, and real-life stories of youth already participating in their pipelines.
- Interactive Q&A sessions and discussions gave the youth in attendance a platform to ask questions, raise concerns, and connect directly with decision-makers and recruiters.

The Outcome: Intentional Inclusion and Sustainable Growth
The engagement reinforced a critical message: industrial growth without youth inclusion is unsustainable. The AIDC and its partners are committed to building bridges — not only between youth and employment, but between ambition and action.
Through continuous collaboration between the public and private sectors, the automotive industry can be a powerful engine of transformation — providing work, purpose, and a future for South Africa’s youth.
